Containing over 338 acres, Horse Creek Wildlife Habitat Management Area (WHMA) is in the southwest corner of the Gros Ventre Range off U.S. Highway 189. This is historic elk winter range and more than 2,000 elk are fed winter here to prevent damage to private property. More than 1,000 tons of hay are required to feed the elk each winter.
Meandering streams, steep slopes, timbered ridges and scattered meadow bottoms provide rich habitat for many bird species. More than 35 species of birds have been identified in these areas. Grosbeaks, hummingbirds, swallows, and tanagers are the most common species.
The WHMA and adjacent Bridger-Teton National Forest is crucial winter habitat for elk, moose and bighorn sheep and provides sufficient habitat for deer, Pronghorn, bears, lions and mountain grouse.
Little and Big Horse creeks support populations of cutthroat and brook trout. Fishing in these creeks is fair. Excellent opportunities also exist for hiking, photography, and wildlife viewing.
This WHMA lies within bear country, please visit our bear wise page for information on recreating in bear country -https://wgfd.wyo.gov/Wildlife-in-Wyoming/More-Wildlife/Large-Carnivore/Grizzly-Bear-Management/Bear-Wise-Wyoming.
